Rush Limbaugh, Haiti and Renaming Racism
Rush Limbaugh is a racist. He may not wear Jackboots and Swastika. But he is the son Father Coughlin, Huey Long, Strom Thurman, W.D Griffith, and William J. Simmons, men who used the media to promote their rabid, psychotic hatred of blacks. The greatest natural disaster in the Western hemisphere has ever seen is unfolding and Rush uses the occasion to spew his hatred of Obama, his ignorance around the black American experience, and his arrogance around the people of Haiti. He is actively trying to discourage donations to disaster relief. Here are some of the gems he has spewed:
This will play right into Obama’s hands. He’s humanitarian, compassionate. They’ll use this to burnish their, shall we say, “credibility” with the black community–in the both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It’s made-to-order for them. That’s why he couldn’t wait to get out there, could not wait to get out there.
“We’ve already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.”
This man’s psychotic ramblings on race are long standing but millions of white Americans who would shutter at being identified as racist listen him every day. This is the one of the issues that rarely gets discussed in our narrow, super-polite national discourse on race. How are the richest and most educated blacks to the poorest ghetto dweller supposed to stay optimistic about substantial change in white privilege and supremacy in America when millions of whites listen to and support the insane racial rhetoric spewed by Limbaugh, O’Reily and Beck. Obama’s Jesus like attitude to their bigotry does not reflect the feelings of Black America. How does their popularity support the oft mentioned idea that America is now post-racial? Freedom of speech is one of jewels of American democracy, but you cannot yell fire in a crowded room. How are black Americans to believe that substantial change will come when a significant part of white America hang on every word these fools say.
Black Caribbean Americans are 17% of the black American population. The Haitian disaster will increase the population above the current 500, 000 Haitian Americans in this country. Illegal Haitian immigrants are routinely returned to Haiti unlike like those from Cuba. Obama has already suspended deportation proceedings and the 20% of Haitians who have the income to leave the country will head to South Florida and New York to stay. There is no infrastructure in Haiti for them to go home to. Haitian Americans with displaced relatives with work their fingers to the bone to get their family members to America and those who cannot will use whatever means necessary to reach this country. I am sure these racial demagogues will do anything in their considerable power to dehumanize these desperate people without mentioning the complex history that ties America to Haiti and how our foreign policy has contributed to this countries underdevelopment for centuries. This disaster will reverberate for years and I know these psychotic bigots will have plenty of fodder for their rantings.
