Domestic Terrorism Arises Again
Scott Philip Roeder, the murderer of Dr. George Tiller, an obstetrician/ gynecologist was a member of an anti-government militia called the Freemen. As Dr. Tiller’s family mourns, Randall Terry the leader of the far right anti-abortion organization Operation Rescue stated that Tillman deserved to be murdered. I am vehemently pro-choice and anti-abortion. I contend that one of the biggest decisions a woman can make is when to become a mother. This decision falls under the right to privacy clause of the Constitution. If you disagree with me, you have the right under the Constitution, but the steps I wish were initiated in this country that will make abortion the last resort. Birth control should be easy to attain and teenagers should be educated learn to respect the consequences of sexual behavior. Abstinence is before marriage is a wonderful concept, but this 21st Century America and we must face the social changes that have swept this country. If these measures are in place, the amount of abortions can decrease.
If we do not teach sexuality in a thorough and responsible manner our community will face even more difficulties than it does now. Factions argue about school taking away a parental decision, but the leading of black women between the ages of 25-34 is HIV/AIDS, over 60% of our children are in single parent homes. The far right has labeled Gynecologists who perform abortions as referred to as abortion doctors, ignoring the rest of their practice. They condone murdering, bombing and harassment to force women to give up their constitutional rights. They have influenced mainstream America so much that Dr. Tiller was one of three doctors in the country to perform late term abortion. No one wants to get a late term abortion, but if the mother’s health is at stake they are a necessary evil. When a woman is in such dire straights can we actually stand by and watch as those who are devoted to woman’s health be murdered?
Two months ago the Department of Homeland Security released a report about the possibility of the increase in domestic terrorism from far right wing extremist groups. A few weeks prior to this announcement Richard Popalawski, a lone wolf far right extremist with white supremacist leanings had killed three policemen in Pittsburg, PA. When the report came out I was encouraged that the fact that America was finally willing to address this country’s long history of domestic terrorism. The KKK raped, tortured and murdered thousands of African Americans, immigrants have been attacked by whites and blacks simply because employers hire them instead of paying Americans a reasonable wage, gays are tortured and murdered for supposedly “making passes.” People have forgotten that the biggest act of terrorism before 9-11 was perpetrated by two Americans, one with ties to the Christian Identity movement. These crimes should not be tolerated in country that values freedom and happiness. The Republicans put up such a fuss that the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano had to apologize for issuing the report. Since there are fewer women’s health clinics in America anti-abortion extremist violence has gone down in the last 15 years. Since the election of Barak Obama we are in a different era and I am concerned that the tragic murder of Dr. Tiller will encourage more far right violence from those who want to move this country away from constitutional freedoms that should be afforded to all.
